Bennett Hill Ridge Line near Mountain Home Idaho

Photo-of-week – Bennett Hills Ridge

Decided to take a quick ATV trip along the Bennett Hills on Saturday October 16th, 2010. Had our Arctic Cat ATV in for some major repairs and wanted to test it out before heading into the more wild places of Idaho. I figured Hot Springs Road and Hot Creek Road northeast of Mountain Home was a good place to find out if the repairs would hold up. They did.

While this area of Idaho isn’t exactly a “get away from it all” place, it certain is a primordial looking area. With the brown volcanic cliffs and sparse vegetation scenery one can easily imagine dinosaurs popping up from behind a rock outcropping. But the only wildlife I saw was 3 pronghorn antelopes, bunches of birds and a bull snake.

Rock hounding wasn’t a goal of this trip because I’ve never seen anything but rhyolite in this area, I did find some interesting specimens. You just never know when you’ll find a seam of quartz but I did. Along with the quartz there was some good examples of feldspar and a opalized quartz/feldspar conglomerate.
