I attended my 1st Fall Harvest Festival in Mountain Home on Saturday October 2nd 2010 and really enjoyed it. There were quite a few people walking the streets enjoying local products and entertainment. The weather was perfect for this celebration of the end of the farming season, if not a wee bit warm for an October event.
The best part of the festival, for me, was the opportunity to explore our local business establishments in the downtown area. I’m not a shopper and spend most of my weekends in the mountains and desert so taking a slow walking tours was an eye opening experience. I saw stores and businesses I never knew existed as well as enjoying the booths set up on the streets and sidewalks of downtown Mountain Home. Walking downtown is the only way to go!
Some Things I Experienced
- Chili samples were available at some of the booths and I have to say some were very good and some were not to my liking.
- Enjoyed talking to one of the owners of Joanne’s Creative Cakes. This one of those places I never knew existed. It a local store so get out there and check it out.
- The Willow Creek Nursery from up near Fairfield, Idaho had a nice shop set up. The sold honey, syrup, fresh fruit and a few other local products.
- Stoecker Jewelers put on a little display on how they facet stones. It was one of those “I didn’t know that’s the way they did that” moment. Also, Stoeckers are about the only people who can facet the famous “Idaho Star Garnet”. And I mean the only people in the US and maybe the world.
- Disappointed I saw only three politicians with booths. That would be State Senator Tim Corder, WECRD Director hopefuls Judy Mayne and Art Nelson. Wonder who gets my vote in November????
- Jackson Sweet Sweets was a pretty cool store.
- The local band called “Working on Fire” was a little rough around the edges but with time they may be a “Mountain Home Success Story”.
