Picture of the Week – Fifth Week of October 2008
The afternoon of Monday October 27th, 2008 brought smoky skies to the mountains north of town. The smoke became thicker and more visible through Wednesday October 29th. Obviously there was a wildfire somewhere near Bennett Mountain, but where exactly?
I tracked down the source of this smoke and it appears that there have been a number of small fires burning to the east and southeast of Bennett Mountain during this period. The picture below shows the location of fires detected by satellite imagery for the last 24 hours starting on the morning of October 29th, 2008. The area highlighted in "orange" is where the recent fires have been detected.
I haven’t found anything on the Internet about the cause of these fires or if they are actively being worked.
