How Many Canadians Cross Our Border

I was talking to a local business owner and he said he has seen more Canadians visitors in the last 6 months than he had in the last few years combined. This got me thinking. Why are Canadians now coming to Mountain Home in bigger numbers recently. My guess is the exchange rate between the Canadian and US Dollar has made the difference.

Below you will find the statistics for all vehicle traffic entering the two Canadian ports of entry into Idaho. I also included the State of Montana number as a comparison. You’ll see the number of vehicles entering Idaho from Canada has steadily increased starting in 2005.

What I didn’t Know

  • There are only two border crossing location into British Columbia, Canada from Idaho. These are at Porthill and Eastport Idaho. Montana has 14 border crossing location with 3 different Canadian Providences
  • Idaho’s border with Canada is only about 45 miles long. Montana shares a 550 mile border with Canada.
  • Border crossings in the western US are predominately open during daylight hours. Border crossings from Michigan and eastward are, for the most part, open 24 hours a day.
