It would be my last Thursday Fun Day for a while so I decided to try my luck fishing the South Fork of the Boise River, “below the dam”. For a mid-March day, the weather was pretty spectacular. With the skies bright and sunny, temperatures in the high 50’s and not too breezy I could only marvel about how lucky I am to be there. And running into friendly folks who are willing to stop and chat turned a great day into an even greater day.
Fishing the South Fork at this time of the year, it’s expected the fisher will not be bringing home any trout. It’s catch and release only until Memorial Day, I think. And I’m okay with that fact as I don’t catch fish on this section of the river very often. And I darn sure don’t hook 20+ inchers either…the legal sized keepers. Others do, frequently.
Friendlies On The Move
I met a fly fisher who was headed out of the canyon and who was fishing just downstream and around the bend from me. Her dog was the first thing Addie the Plott Hound and I heard from them. As dog and owner were headed back to their car, they encounters us having a snack and just enjoying the day along the banks of the South Fork.
The dogs met each other and within seconds were off playing. This put two strangers in a situation where we got to find out what each of us were doing on the river. She is an avid fly fisher from Twin Falls and her dog is an avid travel companion and grasshopper chaser. This friendly fly fisher presented me evidence she can catch rainbows better than I can. The large rainbow trout seen in the preview screen of her “water-proof” digital camera was proof enough. We parted ways about 10 minutes later knowing more about the river and Idaho than before we met. That’s what I call experiencing good people in the great outdoor.
Fun Days will be Different for Now On
I finally landed a big one this week. Not a fish, but what I consider my dream job. This new job will change what I do and what I experience during my “Thursday Fun Day”, I am happy for that change. A dream job comes along once in a lifetime and this is my “once”. I fully plan on taking advantage of this “once” by learning, enjoying and giving back to the community.
This is my life just off Interstate 84 in Mountain Home, Idaho.
