Idaho Politics and Election

The Idaho Mid-Term General Election will be held on Tuesday November 2nd, 2010.  This means there is very little time to truly learn about the candidates who will be making and changing laws, controlling your taxes and making decision for YOU.  To give you a running start on this process, I will be posting some information about the candidates, starting at the federal level and working right down to our local Elmore County candidates.

Idaho, Raise Your Hand if You Voted in the 2010 General Election

There have been a few interesting articles on the internet and newspapers trying to analyze the recent election. Some were quite partisan and some quite smug but all totally useless. I'm more interested in finding who, in Idaho, voted during the 2010 General Election. The Idaho Secretary of State tells us that almost 800,000 citizen voted. Sounds like a lot of people doesn't it?

Voter in Idaho by Counties

Mountain Home Voted Just Enough - We're Not Last!, We're Not Last!
The statistics show us that only 58% of Idaho's registered voters decided to cast a ballot on November 2nd, 2010. And when broken down in county by county numbers some locations showed more interest than others. Being a resident of Elmore County and Mountain Home Idaho, I was interested in what our numbers would look like. As the stick figure graph above shows, only about 5.2 out of every 10 potential and registered voters in Mountain Home voted. Elmore County took the 43rd spot in Idaho with Madison County preventing us from being last on the list.

Elmore County Voters are not last but second last

The Good News isn't Good Mountain Home
Looking at the good news, of the ~10,000 registered voters in Elmore County, 5,000 of us voted. The other good news is that even if all voters got out to the polls, the results for the races for Clerk of the Court, County Assessor and County Coroner wouldn't have changed. Of course, these positions were uncontested seats and that's not so great.

The Bad News is...
1. The 2 Elmore County Commissioner seats up for election could have easily gone to a different candidate. No complaining over the next few years when our county commissioners make decisions you can't live with.
2. If recreational opportunities in Mountain Home remain stagnant, the people who didn't vote in the WECRD election can proudly chant "Who cares!, Who cares!, Who cares!"

Even Idaho elk vote during hunting season

WARNING – Your Vote Doesn't Count if You Leave it at Home
All it takes is 5 minutes to fill in your ballot and you're done. You get to participate in one of the most important events the United States of America conducts. Yes, it may be boring, but so are a lot events in your life. Just remember these quotes on Tuesday morning if you think you might not vote:

  • "Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote." - George Jean Nathan
  • "The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men." - Lyndon B. Johnson
  • "The ballot is stronger than bullets." - Joseph A. Schumpeter
  • "Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting." - Franklin D. Roosevelt
  • "You are a TOTAL LOSER if you don't vote" - Tim Bondy

We Met the Idaho Political Candidates

E-mail Print PDF
The Mountain Home Senior Center hosted a Meet the Candidates Night on Monday October 25th, 2010. I was there and so were about 50 other folks from around the area. This was a great learning experience for me and hopefully the candidates learned something about Mountain Home Idaho.

Meet the Political Candidates Night in Mountain Home Idaho

Some Made it Easy
Candidates Brian Schad, Tim Corder, Rich Wills, Connie Cruser, Judy Mayne and Art Nelson showed up and made the decision to vote for them easy. They were well spoken, explained their positions and impressed me enough to get my vote.

Some Made it Difficult
  • US Senate Candidate Tom Sullivan showed up in a big way. He was extremely well spoken, explained why he is qualified to be a US Senator and even looks like a statesman. This makes my decision on who to vote for in this race very difficult. Why? Sullivan's opponent, Mike Crapo did not show up for this forum. Guess Mountain Home isn't important to Mr. Crapo so maybe my vote isn't important to him either.
  • Idaho's Governor race just got tighter in my opinion. While Keith Allred did not show up at least he had someone who knows his platform stand in his stead. The formidable Mrs. Allred made a good case of why we should vote for her husband Keith. A few days ago Butch Otter may have been a a shoe-in to get my vote, but he didn't didn't show up and neither did Jana Kemp or Ted Dunlap. Sorry Butch, Jana and Ted. My vote will likely go to Keith.
  • Eldon Wallace the Democratic candidate for Idaho's Lieutenant Governor will likely get my vote. Even though he didn't appear to be a real personable guy or well spoken, he did show up in Mountain Home. That goes a long way towards telling me he cares about us little city folks. Would I want Mr. Wallace as my Governor if something happens to the standing Idaho Governor? No but what are the chance of something happening??? Eldon may be hungrier and more eager to do a good job for Idaho than Republican Brad Little.
  • The race for the Superintendent of Public Instruction / Education is a toss up for me. Stan Olson sent his aide to schmooze the Mountain Home citizens. Tom Luna, the Republican incumbent didn't send anyone. So unless Tom has a letter from his mom, he may be looking for another job. In any case a few weeks of detention is in order for not showing his face. I'm a little scared of what will happen with Stan Olson as "Idaho's School Principal".

Impression of Meet the Candidate Night
In short, the Senior Center did Mountain Home proud. They hosted 19 candidates and about 45-65 citizens. I do think future "Meet the Candidate" meetings need to be advertised more. I'd also like to see some youngsters attend these important functions. The average age of the attendee was much closer to "retirement age" than "legal drinking age". It was also good to see one City Councilperson in attendance. Alas, our city government legally must conduct business but I would excuse Mayor Rist and the other 3 City Council members if they wanted to attend this meeting once every couple years.

The important part, and you probably don't care, is I learned about some of the candidates that will be on my ballot next week.

Please vote but vote intelligently on Tuesday November 2nd 2010.

WECRD Election Poll Numbers from the Mountain Home News

E-mail Print PDF
I don't need to tell you how I feel about how the current WECRD board of directors has handled bringing recreation to Mountain Home, Idaho. My views are public and has been reasoned out in my mind. But how are the people of Mountain Home and Elmore County feeling about the upcoming election? You only have to go to the Mountain Home News website to see the poll numbers they have collected.

Mountain Home News Website Poll Numbers as of October 19th, 2010 at 11:00PM
Elmore County Rec District Poll Numbers for 2010 Election

My Take on the Numbers
  • Polls like these are not very scientific.
  • These poll numbers can change drastically in the next 10-12 days.
  • The candidates in this election are lucky there isn't a "Dissolve the Western Elmore County Recreation District".
  • I suspect that the current board members will be not be elected on Tuesday November 2nd,2010.
  • We need a common sense, no nonsense approach developing a recreation program.
  • We need Recreation Now. Not in 5 or 10 years.

Well, what do you think about the upcoming election? Head on over to the Mountain Home News website and vote. And then head out to the real polls on November 2nd, 2010 and do what all concerned citizens do...vote intelligently.

Where:
Mountain Home Senior Center
1000 North 3rd East
Mountain Home, ID

Each candidate will be given one minute to introduce themselves to the public. The seniors will then read written questions by the audience, limiting each candidate response time of two minutes. Each candidate will be given one minute in closing for final comments.

Why You Might Want to Attend the Meet YOUR Candidate Night at the Senior Center
  • Obviously to meet some/all of the candidates you might/might not support for the Tuesday November 2nd, 2010 General Election.
  • To Find out if the "the candidates" really respect the voters of Mountain Home and Elmore County. If they show, at least we'll know they care enough to show their faces.
  • So you can put a face to a name on the ballot.
  • To "learn, baby, learn".

This is what I am looking for from any candidate that shows up
  • Quick, honest answers but not canned answers we have heard or read on websites, brochures and TV.
  • Tell me why you think you are qualified for the job.
  • Respectful behavior! Meeting a candidate should be about "the candidate" and not about degrading, debasing or putting down "the other guy".

Get the word out to everyone you know!

Thanks for visiting my website and hopefully you will leave a comment!
